Introduction
We had to make a timer in PLD for multisim that counted from 0-59 and then reset
Conclusion
- The difference between synchronous counters and asynchronous counters are that synchronous counters share a similar clock where the asynchronous counters have one clock that has it's frequency cut in half for every bit.
- The 74LS193 can count up and down where the 74LS163 can only count up. Also the 74LS163 has to detect for the number that you want to be displayed.
- For this timer I first step up the separate counters with their own clocks just to make sure they were working as intended and had no flaws within their wiring. Then I had to find a way to connect their clocks so that once the ones place displayed a 9 the 10's digit would display a one once the ones place reset back to 0. For a while I had it displaying for 19 then to 10 which wasn't right but I couldn't find how to fix it until later which was as simple as adding an inverter. Next I worked on the reset switch which had to reset both the ones and the tens places back down to 0. I first connected the switch to the clear for the ones place since that was easy. But for the terns place I had to wire another AND gate into what number the flip flops were detecting for. After adding the input of the number and the input of the switch it reset both of the counters back to 0.
- I did not pay attention to my classmates projects
